To continue the journey of Lifting up Dreams program, from March 4th to March 19th 2017, Hong Ngoc General Hospital in cooperation with American surgeons has offered free surgery for 18 disfigured children living in difficult conditions, helping them to improve their appearance and be more confident to integrate to the community.
Lifting up Dreams is the annual charity program hosted by Hong Ngoc General Hospital with the mission of giving life-changing reconstructive surgery to children who have birth defects. Since 2014, the hospital has cooperated with American specialists and experts to conduct free surgery for hundreds of disadvantaged children. The patients’ lovely smiles and bright eyes is a source of motivation for the team of Hong Ngoc General Hospital and international doctors to continue the program this time.
In this mission of the program, Hong Ngoc General Hospital’s key doctor is Dr. Nguyen Nguyet Nha. She was former deputy head of Craniofacial Department at Hanoi National Hospital of Pediatrics and have studied and worked at Craniofacial Center of Changgung Menorial Hospital (Taiwan) and Paris VI Medical University (France). Dr. Nha has cooperated with various teams of foreign doctors for charity examination and reconstructive surgery in Vietnam.
“The children who receive surgery this time mainly have birth defects in ear, head, face, limbs, and upper body areas. These physical deformities make it hard for them to live a normal life. They always feel self-deprecating. However, due to their financial situation, they have to live with the defects for the whole life if they don’t have a chance to receive free surgery. So we do hope that after the program, they would feel more confident in life and have a better future”, said Dr. Nguyen Nguyet Nha.
Dr. Nguyen Nguyet Nha has received much support from the team of American doctors who are experts in microsurgery. Dr. Mitch A. Stotland is the US’s renowned maxillofacial experts specializing in reconstructing ears, cleft palate, breast reconstructive and plastic surgery. He has also joined several patent projects developing surgical equipment at Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. Dr. Gedge David Rosson, Director of Johns Hopkins Center, is specialist in breast implant and reconstruction, facial cosmetic surgery, microchip reconstruction, peripheral neurosurgery, and plastic surgery. Dr. Alexander Spiess has strengths in complex surgery related to wrists, elbows, broken bones, ligaments, tendons and trauma. All of them are kindhearted doctors, always willing to help Vietnamese people, especially children suffering from congenital deformities.
To ensure that all surgeries are conducted following world standards, Hong Ngoc General Hospital has carefully prepared all necessary equipment and facilities, from operation rooms to medical materials used during the surgery. For children with financial problems, the hospital offers them hospitalization costs, sharing the burden with their family.
The first mission of Lifting up Dreams 2017 hosted by Hong Ngoc General Hospital in collaboration with American experts has successful ended, giving the poor disfigured children meaningful gifts to start a brighter future. The program also demonstrates the hospital’s social responsibility and concern to the country’s new generation.
Moreover, to continue the Lifting up Dreams 2017 program, in April, Hong Ngoc General Hospital will cooperate with a team of British specialists to offer free reconstructive surgery and peripheral neurosurgery for poor children with maxillofacial defects. So from now on, we are inviting families to apply for examination and screening before surgery.
