Opening ceremony: Charity surgery program by Facing the World and Hong Ngoc Hospital



In the afternoon, 4 May, 2019, the opening ceremony of Charity surgery program by Facing the World (UK) in collaboration with Hong Ngoc General Hospital has successfully hosted. This program is annually organized by the charity and Hong Ngoc Hospital with the mission of providing life-changing opportunity to Vietnamese poor disfigured children, bringing them a brighter future.

Presenting at the event was Dr. Cao Doc Lap – Director of Hong Ngoc General Hospital and the hospital’s leading specialists in plastic and reconstructive surgery. They are Dr. Nguyen Nguyet Nha – former Deputy Head of Craniofacial Unit, Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics – with more than 40 years of experience in reconstructive surgery; Dr. Nguyen Huu Tung who has been intensively trained abroad; and Dr. Bui Tuan Anh who received Facing the World’s fellowship at Dermatology and Plastics Department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital (London, UK).

Leading the team of experts from Facing the World this time is Ms. Norma Timoney – the charity’s president. The event was also presented by Dr. Niall Kirkpatrick – Medical Director of Facing the World, Consultant Craniofacial Plastic Surgeon and Lead Clinician of Craniofacial Unit – Chelsea & Westminster Hospital London, Ms. Katrin Kandel – CEO of Facing the World and other leading specialists in the field.

In his speech delivered at the event, Dr. Cao Doc Lap expressed his great attitude to Facing the World charity for collaborating with big Vietnam-based hospitals, including Hong Ngoc General Hospital to provide life-changing surgery to disadvantaged children. He believed that the partnership between the hospital and the charity would be strengthened and further developed in the future.

Right after the opening ceremony, the team of British specialists and doctors of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit – Hong Ngoc General Hospital will examine nearly 60 cases of craniofacial deformities to select suitable ones for surgery. CT scan of head and face was applied for severe cases to determine the possibility of surgery. In particular, the hospital will support poor families by offering hospitalization fees.

Since 2016, Facing the World Charity, in collaboration with Hong Ngoc Hospital has successfully performed numerous charity surgeries, bringing life-changing opportunity for disfigured children to integrate to the community.

This mission has marked a new development, further tightening the long-term sustainable partnership between Hong Ngoc General Hospital and Facing the World charity. The partnership has allowed reconstructive and plastic surgeons of the hospital to acquire knowledge and learn from experience of the world’s leading experts. This is a significant step for them to enhance their capacity and reach the charity’s goal of helping Vietnamese doctors to perform complex surgery.
